AUTUMN TERM 1

It has been so nice to welcome your children into year 5 and Matisse class.  We have a busy term ahead with lots of exciting things to look forward to and lots of focused work to complete as we extend our learning in all areas.

Topic- Beast Creator

We have already produced lots of good work.  In English we have been looking a habitats and we created our own habitat and described it.  We also produced our own wordless about our habitats.

In Science and Topic work we have been learning about the classification system and we have been classifying a variety of different things.

The book we have been reading is 'The Imaginary' and we will be linking this in with our English work.

Maths

The children have all settled into their maths groups.  There are two groups in year 5.  One is taught by Mrs Leighton and the other is taught by Mrs Laney/Mrs Cumpson.

Swimming

The year 5's have started to go swimming on a Monday afternoon.  Currently Mrs Cumpson is taking the children swimming.  So Mrs Laney will work an additional afternoon that week.

PGL

The children are going on a residential trip to PGL ( 27th September - 29th September).  They are all very excited about going and I am sure they will have lots of fun with Mrs Cumpson.

Autumn 2

We started this term with an Enabling Enterprise week.  The children designed and made a game which was maths based.  They worked well together and displayed many Enterprising skills throughout the week.  At the end of the week we held our very own 'Dragons Den'.

Topic

We have started our topic 'Zones'.  We will be focusing on the polar regions and climates. In Science and Geography we will be looking at the Artic and Antarctica this will include polar animals and adaptation.  In History we will be researching polar explorers and also learning about the Titanic.

English

We will be reading the book 'Holes' and we have started work on publishing our own newspaper report on how Stanley stole the trainers.

Maths

We have started the half term focusing on multiplication and division.  This has included multiples/factors/prime numbers.

Spring Term 1

Welcome back to a new term. We hope you had a lovely Christmas break.  Thank you for all the lovely cards and gifts that you gave to us both.  They were lovely and very much appreciated.

This is set to be a busy half term.  We have started our new topic-Gallery Rebels.  This will involve looking at different artists and how their art work changed the history of art (Impressionist artists/symbolism/surrealist artists).  The science linked to this topic will be 'Light'.

In Maths we will be concentrating on multiplication and division.  We will focus on different methods and pictorial representations that can be used to work out multiplication and division sums.  The second part of the half term we will be focusing on fractions and decimals.

We have also started to read our new class book 'Coraline' which I am sure the children will enjoy.  In English we have been looking at picture books and the structure of picture books.  The aim is for each child to produce their own picture books which can be shared with some of the younger children in the school.

All Parents/Carers are invited to come into school to look at the picture books that have been created.  This will take place on Friday 19th January, straight after school and we look forward to seeing you then.

Swimming

Up to February half term the children in year 5 will continue to go swimming on a Monday afternoon with Mrs Cumpson.

Spring Term 2

Welcome back to the second half of the spring term.  We have started our new topic on World War Two and the children are very enthusiastic about their learning.  We have listened to the announcement of WW2 by the Prime Minister at the time- Neville Chamberlain.  The children were also given the opportunity to listen to different sounds from this time (Air raid siren/Fighter planes/bombs being dropped).

English

In our English lessons we have been writing a diary entry about the day WW2 was announced.  The pupils had to write it from the point of view of a child in WW2.

We have also started to read our class book called 'Once'.  The children really like this book and are very keen to hear more about the adventures of Felix, a young Jewish boy who lived in Poland in WW2.

Through this term we are also going to be focusing on Reading comprehension and SPAG skills

Maths

We have started our new maths topic on Fractions and later on in the term we will be covering Decimals and Percentages.

Topic

We will be looking at all aspects of WW2, this includes which countries were involved/evacuation/rationing/life in WW2/How the war ended.  We also hop to make some tasty treats using rationed ingredients only.

Reminder

Year 5 will continue to go swimming on a Friday afternoon with Mrs Cumpson.  This will finish at the end of this half term.
